Epistle to the Saints-K 7.23.13

This study begins at the green highlighted heading: please scroll down

 Epistle to saints

Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in

Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus:

it is a common belief that “in Ephesus” was not in the earliest translations and that this epistle was a general letter written to all saints

not to individuals who were deemed saints by men

this letter is being written by Paul who is an apostle of God’s choosing to reveal God’s will to God’s church

persons who belong to God, and as such constitute a religious entity

—‘God’s people.’ κλητος γίοις ‘

to the ones called to be God’s people’ 1 Cor 1:2

Romans 1:7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus

Christ, both their Lord and ours:

1 Corinthians 1:26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.

1 Corinthians 1:27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;

1 Corinthians 1:28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,

1 Corinthians 1:29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

1 Corinthians 1:30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from

God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,

1 Corinthians 1:31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

it seems evident by these verses and others that anybody that’s saved, has had their sins forgiven is a saint, is sanctified

Ephesians 1.15 the thanks giving and prayer is invoked for the sake of

God’s people

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5:18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;

a work of God does’nt go unnoticed, it shines as a light in a dark place

Romans 1:22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

Romans 1:23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man

and birds and animals and creeping things.

as christians/saints we run the risk of doing this in an effort to make God more appealing to the world, by exchanging a reverence for God in our speech and conduct we can become a friend of the world

Mark 6:20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.

From corruption to glory

Ephesians 1:19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might

Ephesians 1:20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,

it says here that it took the great might of God almighty to raise Jesus from the dead  –  behold the power of death and the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe

to be a partaker of flesh and blood means to partake of suffering in flesh and blood even to the point of death and absolute death – separation from God for eternity is our destiny unless we are saved by faith in Jesus and continue in that salvation

  • Hebrews 2:9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus,

crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Hebrews 2:10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to

glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

Hebrews 2:11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,

Hebrews 2:12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”

Hebrews 2:13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”

Hebrews 2:14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,

Hebrews 2:15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

Hebrews 2:16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

Hebrews 2:17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Hebrews 2:18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

  • how great the help that He ministers
  • help = to come to the aid of
  • note how great the victory that was won when Jesus was raised from the dead
  • in taking note of the great power that bound us and still holds others in sin is not to give glory to the enemy of our souls but to increase praise to our God and to trust wholly in Him

Ephesians 1:21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

Ephesians 1:22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,

Ephesians 1:23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins

Ephesians 2:2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—

Ephesians 2:3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Ephesians 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, Ephesians 2:5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved—

Ephesians 2:6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ

Jesus,

Ephesians 2:7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Ephesians 2:9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,

2 Peter 1:4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

2 Peter 1:5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,

2 Peter 1:6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,

2 Peter 1:7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

2 Peter 1:8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.

I know this is a lot of scripture to read and comprehend but I’d rather we have a glut of verses to read and meditate on than to be ill prepared for the spiritual battle that wages around us daily, if we do grasp these verses in their context then we still have barely scratched the surface
